Ο Νίκος Κουρούσιης γεννήθηκε στο Μιτσερό. Σπούδασε ζωγραφική στο St. Martin’s School of Art και στο Hornsey College of Art του Λονδίνου (1960 – 1964) Εκτός από τη ζωγραφική ασχολείται με τη γλυπτική, τη χαρακτική και το θέατρο. Έχει παρουσιάσει τα έργα του σε πολλές ατομικές και ομαδικές εκθέσεις στη Κύπρο και στο εξωτερικό. Συμμετείχε επίσης σε διεθνείς διοργανώσεις όπως στη Μπιεννάλε Νέων Παρισιού (1969), στην Μπιεννάλε Σάο Πάολο της Βραζιλίας ( 1971), στην Μπιεννάλε Βενετίας (1972), στην 11η Μπιεννάλε χαρακτικής στη Λουπλιάνα (1975), στην 3η Διεθνή Μπιεννάλε χαρακτικής στη Νορβηγία (1976) στην 4η Μπιεννάλε χαρακτικής Frechen στη Γερμανία (1976), στην 1η Τριεννάλε Ινδιών (1968), στην 4η Διεθνή Μπιεννάλε χαρακτικής στη Νορβηγία (1980), στην 5η Διεθνή Μπιεννάλε χαρακτικής στη Νορβηγία, Μπιεννάλε Αλεξάνδρειας (1984), Μπιεννάλε Βενετίας (1990) κ.α. Ο Χρύσανθος Χρίστου αναφέρει «.... Ο Κουρούσιης διακρίνεται για τον εκφραστικό πλούτο των έργων του και για την τόλμη των αναζητήσεων του. Μ’ αυτόν έχουμε ένα δημιουργό πάντα ανήσυχο και με κάθε είδους ενδιαφέροντα, επινοητικό και με ιδιαίτερη τάση για τις πειραματικές αναζητήσεις, με εξαιρετικά πλούσια μορφοπλαστική φαντασία και κάτοχο όλων των μυστικών της τεχνικής πραγματοποίησης των προθέσεων του. .....» Nikos Kouroussis was born in Mitsero, 1937. Studied in London at St. Marin’s School of Art (1960-1961) and at Hornsey College of Art (1961-1964). Attended a course on stage design in England in 1977 (on a scholarship from the British Council) and made research and gave lectures in U.S.A. (on a Fulbright scholarship) in 1986. Has given a series of lectures on art at Pratt University in New York in 1976 and 1988 as guest artist, as well as at South Dacota State University. Worked as stage and costume designer in Cyprus and abroad. Has shown his work in one-man exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad: Germany, Athens, London, New York, etc. Also participated in many group exhibitions.
Through the concepts and abstract forms of the four archetypal elements of nature, sun, wind, earth and water, he demonstrates a unique response to universal problems and illustrates aspects of illusion and reality, nature and technology, art and science, which can be reinterpreted visually to lead us into a new understanding of their antithesis to each other and to reveal their common dependency on the natural environment which sustains oil. …. The colours of the solar spectrum fascinate the artist and he explores them extensively in his work. Brilliant reds, yellows, blues and greens are splashed with sweeps, mists, twists and veils against dark, mysterious backgrounds, symbolizing the consequences of our careless behavior which creates pollution, destruction, chaos and catastrophy of our Mother Earth. At the same time they become the source of amorphous shining shapes which emerge and crash open revealing the inherent potential of clean energy. Dr. Despina Serghides |
