Nikoletta
Papamichael
Nikoletta
Papamichael was born in Larnaca in 1977. She attended art
lessons, initially with Andreas and Dora Farmaka and later
on with Kaiti Stephanidou. After finishing High School she
went to Athens where she studied at the workshop of the
sculptor Nikos Stephos.
In
October 1996 she was accepted at the Academy of Fine Art in
Florence. She attended the four year study program at
professor Roberto Giovannelli's workshop and graduated in
February 2001 with distinction.
In
2002 she was accepted at the School of Fine Art at the
University of Complutense in Madrid and received the title
of 'Magister' for the Theory and Practice of Modern Art.
In
March 2001 she took part in a group exhibition at the
''Villa Fiorini Lippi'' gallery in Florence under the
title ''Eight women artists for the eighth of March'',
with three of the art professors of her school and four
other young women artists. In June 2001 she exhibited her
paintings with the title ''Naked Body'' in a group
exhibition at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence. In the
same month she held her own exhibition with great success at
the Kipriaki Gonia Gallery in Larnaca and in September she
took part in a group exhibition under the title ''Cypriot
Artists'' at the same Gallery. In December 2002 she took
part in a group exhibition at the show room of the
University of Complutense in Madrid.
The
art adviser Lia Tornariti quotes: ''Through her work,
Nikoletta Papamichael claims that we are the most central
part of our world, with our desire to leave traces of
our personal views, emotions and experiences. It is our
responsibility to locate and support the other hidden
aspects from the many sides of a personality that does not
exhaust the given stereotypes.''
Nikoletta's
painting resists the flood of artists who wish to monopolize
on the aesthetics
and the sensitivity of a century which ended
controversially. The ''weapons'' she uses are fixed
techniques, an infatuation with
the sacredness of the gaze, her love of
the poetry of the unexpected, her emphasis
on the discovery of the already known, her belief in
the surprise attack of what is considered familiar. Future
for her has already passed by, future might as well be the
past.
The
threshold of her creations is light with its revealing
characteristics. But she does not remain an artist of just
what is seen, she also penetrates into the internal aspects
of the self, having trust on the tradition of the entire
western European art.
For
now, the bystander enjoys the fruitful dialogue which has
begun between the artist herself and the past, while at the
same time enjoying
how she questions the composition and the quality of the
future. Her paintings investigate every fine detail with the
persistance of a devoted monc, revive the satiable and
slanderous aspects of "udity"
or reestablishe the conflict of a lonely figure in the
restricted time and space of a workshop. Where blackness and
earthliness thrive, like a stage of a mysterious play, the
mundane and the base acquire everlasting splendour.
It is exactly at this point where the painting
resists, demanding its rights, where the past as a picture
or a way of living engraves with its power the route to the
future.''
The
artist has the following to say about her work: ''My
painting concentrates on presenting my own self.
I feel that I have no other choice of subject.
I also feel that I do not have any other choice than
to express this through painting. It is a way of coexisting
with myself, an attempt to reconcile my emotional
contradictions. It
is a marriage of shame and freedom, sorrow and vitality,
fear and power, loneliness and love. Constant internal battles of emotions, logic and
morals which can bring me together or can tear me apart. A
strange mixture of adulation and hatred towards myself.''
