Άντρεα Χριστοδουλίδου

Γεννήθηκα στη Λευκωσία όπου πέρασα τα παιδικά και εφηβικά μου χρόνια. Στην ηλικία των έντεκα άρχισα μαθήματα τέχνης έξω από το σχολείο, γνωρίζοντας ότι στο μέλλον θα ακολουθούσα μια καλλιτεχνική καριέρα. Μετά την ολοκλήρωση της μέσης εκπαίδευσης, μετακόμισα στο Εδιμβούργο και σήμερα σπουδάζω ζωγραφική στο Edinburgh College of Art.

Έχω συμμετάσχει σε διάφορες εκθέσεις στο Εδιμβούργο, τόσο εντός του Edinburgh College of Art και ανεξάρτητα. Μερικές από τις εκθέσεις που ξεχωρίζω είναι η έκθεση Σχεδίου στο Edinburgh College of Art η οποία ήταν η μεγαλύτερη έκθεση Σχεδίου στη Σκωτία, καθώς και η έκθεση In the Flesh που ήταν μια ανεξάρτητη έκθεση φοιτητών στη Γκαλερί Seventeen στο Εδιμβούργο. Έχω επίσης εργαστεί εθελοντικά στην Γκαλερί Talbot Rice επίσης στο Εδιμβούργο, όπου ήμουν βοηθός παροχής πληροφοριών στις εκθέσεις της Hannah Derboven και Luc Tuymans. Είμαι ακόμη ένας από τους συγγραφείς της καλλιτεχνικής στήλης της εφημερίδας του πανεπιστημίου The Student και επισκέπτομαι τακτικά διάφορες εκθέσεις και γράφω κριτικές.

Ως άτομο και ως καλλιτέχνης ενδιαφέρομαι ιδιαίτερα από τον τρόπο που ανασχηματίζονται οι ιστορίες μέσα από τις δικές μας διαδικασίες σκέψης, κατανόησης και φαντασίας. Μέσα στο μυαλό μας οι ιστορίες αλλάζουν, εξελίσσονται και μεταμορφώνονται. Ως καλλιτέχνης, αισθάνομαι την επιθυμία να παρουσιάζω ιστορίες μέσα από εικόνες. Η έμπνευση για τις ιστορίες μου προέρχεται από τη ζωή και τις εμπειρίες μου και ειδικά από τον πολιτισμό και την κληρονομιά της πατρίδας μου. Προϊστορικά ελληνικά και κυπριακά αντικείμενα, φιγούρες από το ελληνικό θέατρο σκιών του δέκατου ένατου αιώνα, μαζί με μυθικά πλάσματα και δικές μου καρικατούρες που αναπτύχθηκαν μέσα από τα σχέδια μου, είναι μερικές από τους χαρακτήρες που χρησιμοποιώ στη δουλειά μου. Μερικές φορές τα ειδώλια εικονίζονται κρατώντας σπαθιά ή με τανκς που θυμίζουν τα γεγονότα από τον πόλεμο του 1974 στην Κύπρο. Μερικές φορές είναι απλώς ηθοποιοί σε ένα μυθικό παιχνίδι, όπως η τραγική ιστορία του Θησέα και του Μινώταυρου. Η αντιπαράθεση των μυθικών και αρχαϊκών στοιχείων στο σύγχρονο έργο μου μεταφέρει το παρελθόν στο παρόν δημιουργώντας ένα συνεχές παραμύθι.

Επανασχεδιάζοντας τους χαρακτήρες τους εφευρίσκω εκ νέου και θέλω να πιστεύω ότι μέσα από τις ιστορίες μου ξαναζούν μια νέα ζωή στον εικοστό πρώτο αιώνα.

I was born in Nicosia, Cyprus where I spent my childhood and teenage years. At the age of eleven I started art classes out of school knowing that I would follow an artistic career in the future. Upon completion of my A-level education, I moved to Edinburgh, Scotland and I am currently studying Painting at the Edinburgh College of Art.

I have exhibited in various exhibitions in Edinburgh both within the Edinburgh College of Art and independently. Some of these exhibitions are the Drawing exhibition in Edinburgh College of Art which was the biggest drawing show in Scotland as well as the exhibition In the Flesh which was an independent student led exhibition in Gallery Seventeen in Edinburgh. I have also volunteered at the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh where I was an Information Assistant at the exhibitions of Hannah Derboven and Luc Tuymans. I am also one of the writers of the arts column for The Student, the university’s newspaper and therefore I regularly visit various exhibitions in the city and review them for the weekly newspaper.

As a person and as an artist, I am intrigued by the way stories are formed, through our own thought processes of understanding and imagination. In our minds stories change, reshape, evolve, and metamorphose. As an artist, I feel the desire to relate my stories through images. Inspiration for my stories comes from my own life and experiences and especially from my culture and heritage. Prehistoric Greek and Cypriot artifacts, puppets from nineteenth century Greek shadow theatre, along with mythical creatures and my own caricatures developed through drawing, are some of the players I use in my work. Sometimes the figurines are depicted holding swords or are driving tanks evoking events from the 1974 war in Cyprus. Sometimes they are just actors in a mythical play like the tragic story of Theseus and the Minotaur. The juxtaposition of mythical and archaic figures into my contemporary work effectively blends the past into the present creating a continuum of stories. By drawing the characters as I imagine them to be I somehow re-invent them and I want to believe that they become as much my characters as they are of their original creator or that they get to live a new life in the twenty-first century.

They are my stories.
