1772 M. Vosgien
L'Europe divisee en ses Grands Etats
.

Dictionnaire Geographique Portatif was a very succesful publication during the second half of the eighteenth century. The author is a 'M. Vosgien' who turns out to be a priest from Lorraine (thus 'Vosges'), Jean-Baptiste Ladvocat. This popular work always contained two fine maps, Europe and the World, which were changed as new editions were published.

This map of Europe is from an early edition of Dictionnaire Geographique Portatif and is dated 1759 although this issue was in 1772. The engraver has used an unusual map projection to squeeze the wide east-west extent of the continent into the desired space. This locates Iceland almost completely north of Ireland.

The map has two folds (as issued) and an outline hand colouring.
