Η Μαρία Τούρου γεννήθηκε στην Αμμόχωστο.  Σπούδασε ζωγραφική, σχέδιο και λιθογραφία στο Λονδίνο, Ιταλία και Η.Π.Α. (Hammersmith School of Art and Building, Λονδίνο 1960 - 1966, Positano Art workshop, Italy 1962 - 1963.  Γραφικές Τέχνες στο Marylebone Art Institute, Λονδίνο 1966,  στο Campden Art Institute 1973 και στη Corcoran School of Art της Ουάσιγκτον 1983.

Η ζωγραφική της κινείται στο πλαίσιο της αφαίρεσης και του σουρεαλισμού με συμβολικές προεκτάσεις.  Στα έργα της που διακρίνονται για τις πλούσιες χρωματικές διαβαθμίσεις, προσδίδει ονειρικό χαρακτήρα και μεταφυσική διάσταση, σε ευθεία αντιστοιχία με ψυχικές καταστάσεις, ένταση και συναισθηματική αγωνία.

Έχει στο ενεργητικό της 27 ατομικές εκθέσεις και έλαβε μέρος σε πολλές ομαδικές στην Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό. Έργα της βρίσκονται στη πινακοθήκη του Δήμου Λάρνακας, στη Κρατική Πινακοθήκη Λευκωσίας, στο Museo de Arte Moderno, Κολομβία κ.ά.

Ο Γκλύν Χιούς, ζωγράφος και κριτικός τέχνης αναφέρει: «Οι ρευστές φιγούρες της μοιάζουν να επιπλέουν πάνω στο καμβά και η ζωγραφική τους ποιότητα είναι επίσης εξαιρετική.  Τα έργα της είναι έξοχα ελεύθερα από ακαδημαϊκές και κλασσικές επιταγές.  Τα ταξίδια της τής έχουν αποφέρει αισιοδοξία και ζωντάνια.  Η φαντασία και η αισθητική ευαισθησία ταξιδεύουν σε χώρους όπου, όταν το υποσυνείδητο έρθει στην επιφάνεια, στο φως, παράγει εκπληκτικά έργα».

Ο Εδουάρδος Εσκομπάρ, ποιητής και κριτικός τέχνης αναφέρει: «Η Μαρία Τούρου ανακάλυψε στην τρυφερή ηλικία των πέντε χρόνων πως η Ζωγραφική ήταν η μοίρα της και δεν σταμάτησε από τότε.  Τα έργα της αντανακλούν ψυχές ενωμένες στη μοναξιά και τον ερωτισμό, πλάσματα που η σιωπή τους ανθίζει, έκπτωτους αγγέλους στις ερήμους της γης, ιπτάμενες μορφές χωρίς φτερά – και μια έκρηξη ζωηρών χρωμάτων – άλλοτε έντονων και ζεστών και άλλοτε απαχών και ωχρών παστέλ».

Maria Tourou was born at Famagusta.  She studied painting, drawing and lithography in London, Italy and the United States of America.  (Hammersmith School of Art and Building, London 1960-1966, Positano Art Workshop, Italy 1962-1963.  Graphic Arts in Marylebone Art Institute, London 1966, at Campden Art Institute 1973 and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington 1983.

Her work moves about in the frame of abstraction and surrealism with symbolic prolongations.  In her paintings which are distinguished by the rich colour graduations she adds a dreamy character and a metaphysical dimension equivalent to psychical situations, tension and emotional agony.

Glyn Hughes, painter, art critic, “her fluid figures appear to float on the canvases, her painting is exceptional as well.  Her paintings are superbly free of academic and classical gesture.  It’s just that her travels have given her a buoyancy.  Imagination, aesthetic sensibility travels into the realms where the unconscious when brought out into the light, produces remarkable work”.

Eduardo Escobar, Poet and art critic, “Maria Tourou discovered at the early age of five that Paiinting was her Fate-and she hasn’t stopped since.  Her paintings reflect souls and beings united in solitude, eroticism whose silence bears flowers, falling angels in the deserts of this earth, figures flying without wings – and an explosion of vivid colors – sometimes very strong and warm and sometimes light and pale in pastels”

She has exhibited for 27 times and has taken part in many group exhibitions at home and abroad.

Her work can be found in Larnaca’s City Hall Gallery, in the State Gallery of Cyprus, at Museo de Arte Moderno, in Colombia and in many other puplic and private collections.
